Empowerment
Empowerment means giving people the ability to help themselves. We want to empower them with the knowledge, skills and confidence to make a difference both in their own lives and in the lives of those around them.

Russia: Educating youth about drugs and lifestyle choices
“It is a sad fact in Russia that men, in particular, go to an early grave. On average a Russian man is lucky to make it to 60. In the frozen heart of Siberia they die even younger - around 57. Alcohol is by far the biggest killer. More than half a million Russians drink themselves to death every year.
But since the early 2000s, another killer has been spreading at frightening speed across Russia. Actually there are two of them, one closely stalking the other. The first is heroin. The second is HIV. In the US, there are around 800,000 heroin addicts. In the UK, between 200,000 and 300,000. In Russia, there are now two and a half million.†BBC Report, April 2010
Russia now has the dubious distinction of being the country with the fastest growing HIV infection rate in the world.
A team of twelve (many of whom are also former drug users) go into schools, colleges and drug rehabilitation centres to educate and warn young people about the dangers of drug addiction and HIV.
Micro-Enterprise and Skills Training
Micro-enterprise and skills training
Economics are at the root of a lot of HIV infection, people living in poverty have to make decisions they never would make if not desperate. Added to that, when someone is living with HIV, holding down a job can be a challenge, stigma in the workplace is often a reality.
Economics are at the root of a lot of HIV infection, people living in poverty have to make decisions they never would make if not desperate.
Added to that, when someone is living with HIV, holding down a job can be a challenge, employers may “release†HIV positive people if their status becomes known. If health is a struggle and time off is needed for doctor’s appointments that may lead to someone loosing their job.
We want to empower people to have the skills to either run their own businesses or work for employers who are sympathetic to their problems.
We provide small loan to get started in business or to get specialized training. When repayed, the loan will either feed back into the ministry of be re-lent to another needy person.
Staff development and training
Staff often need to learn new skills such as counseling, leadership, reporting, etc. We want to empower those working with us to do their jobs to the best of their ability.
When staff are equipped to do their work properly and are growing and learning they are more motivated and efficient.
We are committed to, when possible, having staff and volunteers who are living with HIV. They often come into the job with an understanding of the issuses and a desire to make a difference, but need equipping with skills.
